Book of Enoch

There are books labeled 1 Enoch, 2 Enoch, and 3 Enoch. The latter two are generally considered to be forgeries. 1 Enoch is accepted by some because it has reportedly being included in the Ethiopian Bible for many years. When someone using the phrase Book of Enoch to include herein the reference is usually to 1 Enoch.

Enoch is a generally accepted to be a pseudepigraphical writing which means it has uncertain/unknown authors but in an attempt to render it credible it is named after a famous person. In this case the person is Enoch. Enoch the great-great-great-great-great grandfather of Noah is believed to have lived about 3400 BC. The Book of Enoch which is really a collection of Books is believed to have been written by different people between 300 and 1 BC at least 3000 years after Enoch lived. The flood took place around 2348 BC. So if Enoch wrote it then it would have to have miraculously survived the flood on the Ark or elsewhere. Yet, one would think that would have been mentioned in the biblical account of the flood.

It is said Jude 14-15 quotes from the Book of Enoch, specifically Enoch 1:9 where there is similar language. Deuteronomy 33:2 has partially similar language to Jude 14-15 and Enoch 1:9. But Jude speaks of a prophesy by Enoch not the Book of Enoch. Thus, both Jude and the Book of Enoch could be quoting from the same oral tradition or even another writing earlier than the Book of Enoch.

One of the things that give me pause about Enoch is its claim that angels came down and had sex with human women and created giants. Some say this is consistent with Genesis 6:1-4 where it speaks of the “sons of God” in Genesis 6:2, 4 as the ones having sex with human women and producing children that were giants. They say the phrase “sons of God” refers to angels in the sense that it does in Job 1:6 when it speaks of “sons of God” come to present themselves to the Lord Satan being among them.

But the same words are used in Hosea 1:10 though the phrase has the word living in the midst of it saying “sons of the living God”. The Hebrew word translated “sons” in Genesis 6:2, 4; Hosea 1:10; and Job 1:6 is the same word: bane, H1121. Also Numbers 13:33 mentions giants that the spies saw. The Hebrew word nephiyl, H5303, used for giants concerning an event after the flood in Numbers 13:33 is the same Hebrew word used in Genesis 6:4 concerning giants before the flood. Therefore, if the word translated giants means this was referring to the children of angels and human women then some of them would have had to survive the flood other than Noah and his family or someone in Noah surviving family must have been a descendants of the union between the angels and women.

There is nothing in the Book of Enoch essential to ascertain sound theology/doctrine for the KJV provides those essentials.
